At least 150 people were hurt in confrontations between the Police and groups of demonstrators who were protesting against a project of law in favour of women in Dacca, the capital of Bangladesh, according to winesses who spoke to the local Agency UNB.

According to the source, hundreds of agents used batons and tear gas to disperse the protests which took place after the Friday’s prayers in the surroundings of the mosque’s Baitul Mukarram in the capital.

Demonstrators were calling for the Minister of Woman and Children, Rashida K. Chowdhury to resign, because she is going to present a law, in which, supposedly, the equality between man and woman is recognised in inheritances, according to UNB. In the demonstration today, there were members of several Islamist groups, among others, the Committee of the Resistance to Anti-Koranic Lar and the Committee for the Appliance of the Islamic Law.

From Wikipedia:

Bangladesh is a parliamentary democracy with Islam as the state religion[24].
The state religion of the Republic is Islam, but other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony in the Republic.]

But the women are not equal and their recognition as equal human beings is not greeted with peace and harmony by some of the men in the Republic

(Act.) Read Watcher’s post over at Eye on the World. An excerpt:

Which is funny (as in strange and not humorous) because in Bangladesh today there was a huge riot as people clashed with police over a plan to give women the same inheritance rights as men. Yes folks, the Mullahs have been spreading their magic as always and their latest incantation which has spellbound the male faithful is one which informs them that affording equal inheritance rights, including property, to men and women is evil and against the teachings of the Koran.

Makes you wonder just what kind of faith ‘Islam’ really is. I mean they insist that women are covered up, that men shave not only their pubic areas free of hair but also their backsides and insist that men grow beards. An if you are caught in the presence of a women then it’s the sword for you matey. Add the Arabic saying that women are for babies and young boys are for fun, and I can see a good reason why the Mullahs don’t wish to give women equal rights.
